Frank Smith is Director of Data Analysis at VEMCO, the world leader in the design and manufacture of systems of acoustic tags and receivers for studying the behaviour and migration of fish and other aquatic animals. Frank has been with them for 20 years and for much of that time has focused on the VEMCO Positioning System (VPS), which enables researchers to track fish with GPS-level accuracy. Frank develops the VPS algorithms and methods, and leads a team of software developers and data analysts who have delivered positioning data to hundreds of researchers worldwide. Recent advances in acoustic communication bandwidth has led to the collection of datasets that are hundreds of times larger than the previous generation of technology, which has led Frank to explore technologies suitable for analyzing this ‘big data’.
